General Tire Vegas to Reno
Vegas to Reno: another iconic race on the Best in the Desert racing series. With the race being held on a Friday, qualifying and tech were on Tuesday and Wednesday. Just like any typical summer day in the middle of the Nevada desert, it was hot, over 100 degrees, and expected to be dry. To our luck some early rain softened up the course and help minimize dust. With the car in perfect condition we handled qualifying with a solid 6th letting us start up front. Once through tech we did a last minute prep on the car then headed in for the night. Friday was expected to bring a long day of racing starting fairly early in the morning bringing use across the Mojave and into the beautiful scenery of Reno.
The race got off to a great start. With minimal people in front we held a solid 6th while pushing to make up some ground on the drivers up front. This course was mellow and fast, allowing my General Tires to float above the rough stuff. Somewhere around the midpoint of the race, about 300 miles in, we cracked the crossover bleeder tube for the heads causing the car to overheat. Being close to a pit we managed to get the car in the pit and get it welded back up. Once the motor cooled we got back in and pushed hard, now coming from the back we had a lot of ground to catch up. The remaining 200 miles we pushed our way up to higher elevation. We went from open desert to beautiful landscape of Reno. Crossing the finish line in just over ten hours. Given the minor setback with the crossover bleeder tube, we had a flawless run. Every one of my crew members had outstanding performance in each pit and helping get the car prepped for this race.
